Friday 28th October 2011. UK manufacturer of interior building solutions, SAS International, welcomed Adrian Bailey MP to its Oldbury facility in the West Midlands to show “Made By Britain” was a reality in his constituency.
The “Made By Britain” campaign was launched by the Government’s Business Secretary, Vince Cable, and is looking to promote Britain’s best manufacturing firms, asking Members of Parliament to nominate examples of manufacturing excellence.
SAS International is proud of its state-of-the-art factory and Mr Bailey was given a tour of the facility.
Mr Bailey commented: “It’s been interesting to see firsthand how SAS International is achieving growth in manufacturing and supplying to UK and overseas markets. SAS has shown huge commitment to their partitioning and doors business by opening SAS Direct depots and providing training for staff. They are significantly investing for the future.”
Privately-held, SAS International has operated at Apollo Park for over 5 years and is still investing in skilled labour in the area as the West Midlands has historically been at the heart of the car manufacturing industry. There are currently 160 local employees at the SAS International site on Rounds Green Road, Oldbury.
Mark McElhinney Managing Director from SAS International said: “Investment in skilled labour in the UK is key to ensure both manufacturing and the UK economy stay strong; it needs to be a virtuous circle. We hope that Mr Bailey will take what he saw here today as a sign that we represent manufacturing excellence on his doorstep.”
SAS International also announced plans recently to extend its manufacturing facilities in Maybole, Ayrshire by 7500 sq m. The site in Oldbury, and a third in Bridgend, Wales, have already been refurbished and extended to meet demand for its products, and as the company continues to invest in premises and training for its staff and to support customers.
Last year SAS International also opened a number of SAS Direct depots offering contractors quality products direct from the manufacturer at competitive prices. The depot at Birmingham opened in April 2010 and in less than a year the facility doubled in size to 10,000 sq feet.
SAS International supplies products for building projects as far afield as Australia, the Middle East as well as through Europe, and experienced record pre-tax profits in 2010, with export orders increasing 127% year on year.
